Saltwells Nature Reserve is perhaps most famous for its bluebells, with the woodland providing carpets of blue during Springtime, but with its varied habitats linked with many wildlife corridors, a host of different plants grow here.
The large areas of grassland at Saltwells also provide an ideal habitat for a range of wildflowers. These areas are grazed by our herds of Exmoor ponies which aids the management of the grassland and ensures the wildflowers continue to flourish. Amongst the species present we have at least four species of grassland orchids whose populations are increasing well.
The young woodland, hedgerows, scrub and even the odd patch of heathland within Saltwells also support a huge, varied amount of spring flowers.
As you visit the Nature Reserve in late Spring, take time to look closely and see if you can spot any of the wild flowers pictured below, and look out for our upcoming leaflet on the flora to be found at Saltwells.
