Our guided Bat Walks were as popular as ever this year, with all four walks fully booked in record time and visitors young and old joining us in search of Saltwells bats.
The bats didn't disappoint, and armed with bat detectors and torches, we soon heard the 'slip slop' sound of the common and soprano pipistrelle bats around the reservoir and were lucky enough to spot them flying around hunting for insects. Close to the canal, the detectors picked up the 'machine gun' sound of the Daubenton's bats that were spotted swooping along the canal close to the water catching the insects there.
Our survey of the bat boxes earlier in September, led by our volunteer, Pete, who is licensed to check the bats, found a healthy population of bats at Saltwells- this bodes well for future bat walks in coming years.
